I am the past President of WONCA Europe, working as an active Professor at Ankara University School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine (FM) since 2011. I am also one of the Past Presidents of the European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN).
I graduated from Istanbul University (1987) School of Medicine. I completed my Postgraduate specialization and defended my thesis in Family Medicine in 1993. I am one of the seven founders and former Presidents of the Turkish Association of Family Physicians. Currently I am a member of the Academic Board of Family Medicine (FM) in Turkey.
I was certified as a General Practice (GP) Trainer at the University of Exeter Postgraduate Medical School, UK (1993). I worked in internal medicine clinics in Essen/Germany. I worked as Deputy Medical Director of the METU University for 18 years, and was an advisor of the Ministry on FM/GP. I have also worked on the editorial boards of many PC journals. I was involved in organizing the 2 WONCA Europe and 5 EGPRN Conferences in Turkey.
I am founder of FM practices in Ankara since 1999, and in Istanbul since 2013. I have been a preferred family physician of the embassies and foreign missions including the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), Sweden, United Nations (UN), International Organization of Migration (IOM), International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC).
I have been authorized to conduct the migrant health screenings for the USA, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I was trained in Global TB Institute, Newark- NY, participated in training in Bangkok, and also in Atlanta by CDC. I am currently a board member of migrant health doctors organization-IPPA. I visited Uzbekistan as an advisor to support the panel physicians to improve migration health process in primary care, and prepared a report to the CDC through IPPA (July 2019).
I have been a temporary “technical expert” in World Health Organization (WHO) Europe on Primary Care. I have contributed to the “Integrated Brief Interventions for Noncommunicable Disease Risk Factors in Primary Healthcare: the manual” published © World Health Organization 2022, ISBN: 978-92-890-5855-1 (PDF) . I have been working with the WHO Experts for the new “Therapeutic Patient Education: a short guide” under the lead of WHO Europe which is about to be finalized.
My research publications are in the field of Primary Care, Clinical Family Medicine, screening, migrant health, health literacy, overdiagnosis and patient empowerment. I am representing Family Physicians of Europe in the European Cancer Organization (ECO) and lead two European Project Packages which are an income for WONCA Europe. Representing WONCA Europe in the European Medicines Agency's health care providers commission I am trying to introduce to the agency our point of view.
In addition to authoring books and book chapters of more than 100 printed articles cited, I have a preferred place in the professor assignment in international juries of academic positions in universities, in countries including Slovenia, Germany, France, Portugal, UK, Israel, Poland, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Italy, Greece, Croatia, as well as national inter-universities commission duties.
I have been a member of one of the oldest social and charitable organizations in the world carrying principles of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity.
I worked in Foundations and clubs that invest in our future leaders and philanthropists by funding scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study.
I provide scholarship by my own resources to a number of undergraduate students who need it due to the recent devastating earthquake where many families were destroyed.
With my team in both practices, we are helping the refugees living in Turkey, who are regarded as temporary guests, in their health needs and immunizations, in both Ankara and Istanbul. With my team we are trying to be a bridge between the UN and international organizations like IOM and International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC).
Currently an academic Professor in Ankara University School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine and founder of Migrant Health Practices in Ankara and in Istanbul besides a family practice in Ankara.
